On July 12th, Chelsea Cunningham was at work at Sportsman Warehouse when a customer took a gun and began loading it with stolen ammunition. Cunningham took immediate action, and attempted to take the gun out of his hands. Dakota Anderson was a customer in the store, and jump in to help without thought of the potential dangers. Their quick actions stopped a potential disaster that day. Chief Dave Booth honored their actions during the August 6th Heber City Council Meeting, calling them Heroes and honoring them with Heber City’s Busted Award.
Booth said, “On July 12, Friday at 11:30 am a local citizen went into our local Sportsman Warehouse, and he took a box of ammunition put it into his pocket, unnoticed by Sportsman Warehouse and went to the gun counter, asked the clerk there is he could look at a gun, she produced the gun for him to look at, he took that gun, took the box of ammu, left the counter and immediately began to load the weapon with multiple rounds, which leads us to believe, we speculate, but leads us to believe that his intent was to hurt others within the store.
Those are two of our officers that responded and took this individual into custody. I could not be more proud of these two individuals, especially Chelsea. To immediately engage. We in law enforcement say all the time, you see something, you say something. We say that all the time. In this case, they saw something, Dakota heard something, and they took action. And that’s what needs to happen in my opinion. They definitely have a right to protect themselves. I say they have a duty to protect those around them. If more individuals would do what these two individuals did, we wouldn’t have a lot of the problems we see occurring throughout the nation.”
