Salt Lake City Announces New Commission on Racial Equality In Policing

SALT LAKE CITY-Thursday, Salt Lake City mayor Erin Mendenhall announced the formation of the Commission on Racial Equity in policing in response to public calls for reform.

This new commission was announced by Mendenhall at the International Peace Gardens at Jordan Park in Salt Lake City.

The creation of the commission follows weeks of social unrest and demonstrations following the death of George Floyd May 29 at Minneapolis.

Last week, the Salt Lake City Council responded to calls to slash police funding by reallocating about $5.3 million in police budget.

This commission is comprised of Calvary Baptist Church pastor emeritus Rev. France Davis, director of Migration and Refugee Services for Catholic Community Services Aden Batar, executive director of Renew Wellness & Recovery Verona Sagato-Mauga, chair of the Utah Black Roundtable, Darlene McDonald, criminal, juvenile and social justice practitioner Dr. Moises Prospero of iChamps and Salt Lake City Human Rights Commissioner and attorney Nicole Salazar-Hall.
