Police Investigating After Man Killed In Cedar City Shooting

CEDAR CITY, Utah-Monday morning, authorities in Cedar City are investigating an incident after their deduction that a man was shot dead Sunday night.

At 10:38 pm Sunday, police responded to a call of shots being fired in the 100 West block of Sunset Drive per a news release from the Cedar City Police Department.

Officers discovered 47-year-old Jeremy Hunter had perished from multiple gun-shot wounds per the release.

Authorities determined 26-year-old Chaz Bennett had fled the scene on foot, the release confirmed.

Officers found Bennett a few blocks away from where Hunter’s body had been discovered and, as the release attests, he had two rifles with him.

Authorities commanded Bennett to drop the guns but, per the release, he then ran away from them.

Bennett was later found a short distance away with a self-inflicted gunshot wound per the release.

Bennett gave himself life-threatening injuries and was later transported to a hospital via ambulance and later to another hospital via medical helicopter.

As of Monday morning, authorities did not know the motive for the shooting and police confirmed the investigation is “active and ongoing.”

The news release concluded, saying Cedar City Police extend deep sympathies to the families involved.
