Elderly Man With Crutches Saves Kids From Drowning In Virgin River

ST. GEORGE, Utah-This past Sunday afternoon, 71-year-old St. George resident Kim Pollock saved several youth on inner tubes in the Virgin River who almost drowned.

Four kids were on the inner tubes and while one was able to escape and float downstream on his own, the other three were in danger.

Despite wearing blue jeans and an 8-pound weight on his leg, Pollock was able to successfully go into the water and pull the kids out.

He first attempted to pull the kids out with his crutch but as he waded into the river, the water pulled him under.

As he went under the water, he kicked off of the bottom of the river to get back to the surface.

He said he was finally able to reach out and help one boy to the shore.

By this time, another bicyclist had approached the shore, assisting Pollock in getting the other two kids out.

Pollock said his wife was on the shore, yelling, and another woman came by with her two children.

The woman was a nurse who was on maternity leave after just having had a baby. It was she who called 911.

St. George Police and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the call while St. George Police Officer Tiffany Atkin told St. George News that the other man who assisted in pulling the kids to shore was 50.

The ages of the youths in the Virgin River on the inner tubes were 18, 11, 19 and 14 respectively.

No injuries were reported, but Atkin said it’s important to be mindful that the runoff is swift and deep in the Virgin River because of the snow melt from various mountains in southern Utah.

Pollock said the kids were thankful that he and the other man rescued them.
