Matthew Durrant To Serve 3rd Term As Utah Supreme Court Justice

SALT LAKE CITY-In news released Tuesday, Utah Supreme Court Justice Matthew Durrant will serve a third term presiding over the Beehive State’s high court.

Courts spokesman Geoffrey Fattah, in a Monday prepared statement, said his fellow justices unanimously voted to keep him in that role.

Durrant’s new term will last four years as he will also preside over the Utah Judicial Council as part of his role.

He was reelected in a vote conducted last Thursday.

Durrant has recently led Utah through the arduous travails of the coronavirus with a transition to online court proceedings.

However, courts still remain open for some types of hearings presently.

A virtual health center has also been installed to help those with legal questions from afar.

During his Monday remarks, Durrant lauded his colleagues for their adaptation during COVID-19.

Former Utah Governor Mike Leavitt appointed Durrant to the Utah Supreme Court in 2000.

He succeeded then-chief justice Christine Durham in 2012, winning reelection in 2016.

Durrant has a law degree from Harvard University and previously served as a judge in Utah’s 3rd District Court.
