LOGAN, Utah – Utah State senior safety Dallin Leavitt has been named to the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, it was announced Tuesday by the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA).
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,†is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Leavitt is one of seven Mountain West players named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and one of 108 players from college football’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) nominated for the award.
Leavitt, a 5-foot-10, 205-pounder from Portland, Ore. (Central Catholis HS/BYU), started all eight games that he played in during his first season at Utah State in 2016. He finished the year fourth on the team with 57 tackles (32-solo, 25-assist), which included 2.0 tackles for loss, while adding two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and a team-best three interceptions. He recorded a career-high 15 tackles, to go along with one pass breakup at USC, nine tackles and one quarterback hurry against San Diego State, and eight stops with one quarterback hurry against New Mexico. In all, Leavitt recorded at least five tackles in six of the eight games he played in.
Leavitt, who earned academic all-conference honors in 2016, is on schedule to graduate for Utah State this academic year in interdisciplinary studies. As for community involvement, he is involved with various youth clinics and organizations.
The formal announcement of the 2017 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation’s press conference in New York City on Dec. 5. The presentation of the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 49th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 16, 2018, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Utah State will begin the 2017 season at Wisconsin on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. (MT), in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN. USU’s home opener will be on Thursday, Sept. 7, against Idaho State at 6 p.m., while its Mountain West opener will be at San José State on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Fans can become season ticket holders for as low as $110. New for 2017 are Value Season Ticket Plans, which include four adult season tickets on the east side of the stadium starting at $450. Youth season tickets are available for just $60 and Family Plans, consisting of two adult tickets and three youth tickets, can be purchased for as low as $340.
