SAN ANTONIO – The Utah baseball team split a doubleheader with UTSA on Friday afternoon, winning game one 17-3 and falling in game two, 8-3.
Although UTSA (6-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Utes (6-3) scored six runs in both the second and third innings to take a 12-1 lead. Utah continued to pull ahead with two runs in the fifth and three runs in the seventh innings.
Dallas Carroll led Utah at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI, including a two-run home run. Josh Rose, Chandler Anderson and Zack Moeller all drove in three runs for the Utes while Olvier Dunn, Hunter Simmons, Rose and Moeller all had two hits.
Jayson Rose pitched six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the win. Hunter Rodriguez threw one inning in relief, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
In game two, UTSA took advantage of a seven-run second inning en-route to an 8-3 win. Moeller and Simmons both homered for the Utes and Chase Bauerle pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Game 1
UTSA took a 1-0 lead after a pickoff attempt led to a rundown, letting the runner score. In the second inning, Simmons and Rose both singled and Wade Gulden walked to load the bases. Two runs scored after an error on Anderson’s ground ball and Moeller followed with a double to left field to send another run home. Dunn added an RBI single with two runs scoring on the play after an error, giving Utah a 6-1 lead.
Utah took advantage of several walks en-route to scoring six runs in the third. Simmons and Rose walked before Gulden was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anderson walked to send in the first run of the inning and Moeller drove in two runs with a single. Two more walks, to Kyle Hoffman and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., re-loaded the bases and sent in another run. Carroll added a run on a sacrifice fly while Simmons, who started the inning, hit an RBI single to make it 12-1.
Carroll hit his first home run of the season to left field in the fifth, a two-run shot, giving Utah a 14-1 lead. Although UTSA hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, Utah continued to pull ahead with three runs in the seventh. Utah loaded the bases after singles from Hoffman and Carroll with a walk to Simmons, leading to a three-RBI double from Rose.
Game 2
UTSA scored a run in the first inning after an error on a failed pickoff attempt, and the Roadrunners seven runs in the second inning came after four hits (including three doubles) and four walks.
Moeller got Utah on the board in the third inning with his first homer of the year while Simmons hit his first homer of the year in the seventh inning. The Utes added a run in the eighth inning. Anderson doubled to lead off the inning and Moeller was hit by a pitch. After two strikeouts, back-to-back walks were issued to Dunn and Carroll, leading to the Utes third run of the game. Another strikeout ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Utah put two on in the ninth with two outs but a strikeout ended the game.
Moeller had two hits to lead the Utes at the plate.
On the mound, Bauerle was strong in relief, allowing just four hits with two strikeouts. Trenton Stoltz pitched in the eighth inning, Tanner Thomas threw two innings, and Jacob Rebar earned the loss in the start.
