NEW YORK (AP) — Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper is the major league’s top vote-getter for the upcoming All-Star game and will be joined in the National League outfield by Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon and Marcell Ozuna (oh-ZOO’-nuh) of the Marlins. The NL infield has Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado (ar-eh-NAH’-doh), Reds shortstop Zack Cozart, Washington first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and Nats second baseman Daniel Murphy. Giants catcher Buster Posey will handle the pitchers early in the game at Miami.
NEW YORK (AP) — The American League starting outfielders for next week’s All-Star game are slated to be Houston’s George Springer, Yankees rookie slugger Aaron Judge and Angels star Mike Trout. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and Houston second baseman Jose Altuve (al-TOO’-vay) are starting infielders, as are Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez and Toronto first baseman Justin Smoak. Kansas City’s Salvador Perez will be the starting catcher for the Junior Circuit, and Corey Dickerson of the Rays with be the designated hitter.
UNDATED (AP) — The San Jose Sharks have kept Joe Thornton and lost Patrick Marleau, who signed a three-year, $18.75 million package with the Maple Leafs. The 38-year-old Thornton said he heard from more than half the league before taking San Jose’s one-year, $8 million pact. Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals have signed center Evgeny Kuznetsov (kooz-NEHT’-sahv) to an eight-year, $62.4 million deal.
PEABODY, Mass. (AP) — Kenny Perry is the U.S. Senior Open champion for the second time. Perry closed with a 2-under 68 for a record score of 264 and his fourth major victory in the senior tour. He started the final round one stroke behind Kirk Triplett and finished two shots in front.
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (AP) — Danielle Kang closed with a 4-under 68 to earn her first LPGA victory, the Women’s PGA Championship by one shot over Brooke Henderson. Kang bogeyed the tricky par-3 17th and Henderson closed with two consecutive birdies to move into a tie for the lead. Kang overtook Henderson and captured the tournament at 13 under with a two-putt for birdie on 18.
