INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Takuma Sato held off Helio Castroneves (EH’-lee-oh kas-troh-NEH’-vehs) to become the first Japanese winner of the Indianapolis 500. It was only the second IndyCar victory for Sato, who won in 2013 and is a regular on the Formula One circuit. Ed Jones finished third, followed by Max Chilton and Tony Kanaan (kah-NAHN’).

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Austin Dillon has earned his first NASCAR Cup win by taking the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Dillon stayed out instead of pitting and made it to the finish line ahead of first-stage winner Kyle Busch. Martin Truex Jr. was third after leading 233 of 400 laps.

PARIS (AP) — The French Open continues today following a stunning loss in the women’s bracket. No. 1 seed Angelique Kerber was knocked out of the tournament by 40th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova, 6-2, 6-2. Kerber is the first top-ranked player in the Open era to fall in the first round at Roland Garros.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Kevin Kisner held off a late-charging Jordan Spieth (speeth) to capture the Colonial. Kisner birdied the first three holes on the back nine and closed with a 4-under 66 for a 10-under total. He capped the tournament with a clutch par save following a wayward tee shot to finish one shot ahead of Spieth, Sean O’Hair and Jon Rahm.

STERLING, Va. (AP) — Bernard Langer has broken Jack Nicklaus’ record by winning a ninth senior major title. The 59-year-old Langer closed the Senior PGA Championship with a 4-under 68 for an 18-under total that left him one stroke ahead of third-round leader Vijay Singh (VEE’-jay sihng). The Senior PGA had been the lone major to elude Langer.
