GUNNISON, Utah (AP)-Wednesday evening, Gunnison High School hosted the Gunnision Invitational track and field meet, which featured 1-A, 2-A and 3-A schools throughout central and northern Utah.
On the girls’ side of things, North Summit easily blew away the field, posting 253.5 points to decisively out-distance second-place Manti who had 126 points.
Ashlin Blonquist and Sislee Richins of North Summit won the girls’ 100 and 200-meter dashes respectively while Maggie Zwahlen won the girls’ 1600-meter run for the Braves. Blonquist also won the girls’ discus crown, showcasing her versatility.
Manti’s Madison Norris won the 3200 and 800-meter runs for the girls and Gunnison’s Kate Sorensen swept the 100 and 300-meter hurdles titles on her home track.
Adranne Rowser of North Summit gave the Braves another individual title in the long jump and teammate Teesha Richins took the crown in the high jump.
Kaylie Jensen of South Sevier won the girls’ javelin crown with Madeline Birk of North Summit taking the shot put title to close out individual events for the girls.
North Summit removed all doubt from who would win the team title by decisively sweeping the 4 x 100, medley and 4 x 400 relays.
For the boys, Manti edged out North Summit 176.5-154.5 and despite placing with few individual event winners (Andrew Valentine and Trevor Olsen were the sole exceptions by winning the boys’ discus and javelin titles respectively), they placed in the top five in many events.
Jordan Cheney, for instance, placed second in both the boys’ 3200 and 1600-meter runs and Izaak Butler did so in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
The Templars also won the boys’ 4 x 400 relay, the final event of the meet, to get the sufficient points to edge North Summit in the standings.
Keeper Farnsworth of South Sevier took the crown in the boys’ 100-meter dash while in the 200, Jonathan Wellman of Maeser Prep took the title.
Jacob Arts of Maeser took the boys’ 400-meter dash crown while DJ Matthews of Summit Academy swept the long-distance events, netting victories in the 3200, 1600 and 800-meter runs.
Eisley Scholes of North Summit swept the titles in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles while Braves standout Calvin Hunsaker took the crown in the high jump.
In the long jump, Jaxson Dean of South Summit won the crown and Dalton Richins of North Summit took the shot put title.
