Weber State’s Josh Davis Named As Utah Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year

SALT LAKE CITY-Monday, Weber State tailback Josh Davis was named as the Utah Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year by the Utah Sports Commission as part of the Governor’s State of Sport Awards.

Davis will be presented with this honor by Utah Governor Gary Herbert at the Governor’s State of Sport Awards event.

This celebrates the Beehive State’s sports industry and honors excellence in high school, amateur, collegiate, Olympic and professional sports.

This year’s award ceremony is slated for April 10 at Vivint SmartHome Arena in downtown Salt Lake City.

Davis, who is entering his sophomore campaign this autumn, also won the Jerry Rice award from STATS, which is awarded to the top freshman football player in NCAA FCS football.

Davis set a Wildcats’ freshman record by running for 1,362 yards, ranking 12th nationally at 113.5 yards per game.

Davis also netted 30 receptions for 193 yards and returned 14 punts for 224 yards and one score.

His 1,779 all-purpose yards were the most in program history for a freshman and the seventh most in a season for a Wildcats player.

He ranked 10th nationally in all-purpose yards at 148.2 yards per game.

Davis was also named as the Big Sky Conference’s freshman of the year as he became the first Wildcat in program history to receive this honor.

This commemorates the third consecutive year Weber State has been honored at this event. Last year, Wildcats football head coach Jay Hill was named as the Utah Coach of the year.

The prior year, Weber State men’s basketball player Joel Bolomboy was named as the state’s male collegiate athlete of the year.
