OREM, Utah-Wednesday, as the first day of UHSAA 5-A state wrestling occurred at the UCCU Arena at Utah Valley University, Wasatch wrestling is closely behind Payson in the overall standings.
The Lions are in first place with 125 points while Wasatch is second with 120.5 points.
Box Elder is a distant third at the present moment with 79 points.
Competing for the Wasps at 106 pounds is freshman Duncan Watt. On the day, he fell by decision, 12-8 to Payson’s Eduardo Cabrera, won by fall over Payson’s Dylan Wilson and won by decision over Alta’s Jaxon Moe, 15-10.
At 113 pounds, sophomore Heath Clyde won by technical fall over Highland’s James Berg, 7-0. He then won by fall over Timpaonogos’ Brock Harris.
Also at 113 pounds, freshman Ryder Robinson won by fall over Mountain Ridge’s Danny Reyes and later by decision over Park City’s Jared Miller 11-4.
At 120 pounds, senior Deklan Kelly won by fall over Mountain View’s Anthony Avila and also by fall over Anderson Packer of Lehi.
Also at 120 pounds, freshman Austin Kelly won by fall over Mountain View’s Raul Mateos and via decision over Luke Macdonald of Salem Hills, 4-3.
At 126 pounds, freshman Bryson Lloyd won by decision over Box Elder’s Isaac Richards, 4-3. He then fell to teammate Treyson Davis by fall and won by decision over Emory Packer of Lehi, 7-2.
Also at 126 pounds, Davis, a senior, won by decision over Orem’s Cayden Blackhurst, 10-7.
At 132 pounds, junior River Wardle won by fall over Orem’s Justin Evans and also by fall over fellow junior teammate Noah Roylance.
Roylance also won by decision over Murray’s Chandler Thompson, 6-5. Later, Roylance won by fall over Cole Carter of Payson.
At 138 pounds, junior Cooper Scott fell by tech fall to Brighton’s Anthonee Ouk. Scott then won by fall over Provo’s Daeshaun Lee and lost by fall to Payson’s Trey Hiatt.
Also at 138 pounds, senior Sammy Heywood won by fall of Mountain View’s Aaron Hyatt. He also won by tech fall over Declan Morris of Maple Mountain, 20-4.
At 145 pounds, senior Stockton O’Brien won by fall over Lehi’s Blake Peterson and by technical fall over Payson’s Trevor Frank.
At 152 pounds, sophomore Kolby Cluff was downed by fall by Jacob Giuaque of Olympus and lost to Woods Cross’ Matthew Harden 9-4.
Also at 152 pounds, junior Alex Hendrix won by fall over Payson’s Chandler Loveless, fell by decision to Farmington’s Austin Gillette and won by fall over Crew Smithson of Brighton.
At 160 pounds, sophomore Charlie Fassold won by decision over Mountain Ridge’s Tyler Larsen, 4-0. Fassold fell by decision to Viewmont’s Alex Zesiger, 4-1. Fassold later won by fall over Stan Butera of Olympus.
At 170 pounds, sophomore Christian Slack won in sudden victory over Box Elder’s Harrison Hodgson SV-1 7-5 after which Andrew Jensen of Maple Mountain defeated him by fall. Slack then won by major decision over Corbin Carlson of Timpanogos.
Also at 170 pounds, senior Brock Lloyd won by fall over Brighton’s Bridger Gundry and he won by decision over Mountain Ridge’s Mark Rausch, 3-2.
Finally, at 182 pounds, junior Alexander Budd fell, via fall, to Box Elder’s Lucas Cochran and by decision to Moises Contreras of Timpanogos, 5-2.
