UVU’s Lambert Tabbed Winner of 2017-18 WAC Stan Bates Award

DENVER-Tuesday, Utah Valley University cross country/track athlete Tyson Lambert and Grand Canyon softball player Bianca Boling were named as the 2017-18 Western Athletic Conference Stan Bates Award winners.

The award is named after long-time WAC commissioner Stan Bates and is given to the WAC’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

It also recognizes athletic, academic and community accomplishments. This award also includes a $3,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Lambert is a graduate of Grantsville High School and earned his bachelor’s degree at UVU in information systems in May 2017.

He is currently on track to earn his master of science in cyber security in the spring of 2019.

He is a 9-time all-WAC academic honoree and was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship in March.

This commemorates the fourth time a former Wolverine has won this postgraduate award.

Lambert was a 2017 runner-up at the WAC Cross Country championships and earned a selection to the NCAA Championship meet after earning all-region honors by placing 24th at the NCAA Mountain regional.

At the 2018 WAC outdoor track and field championships, he finished third in the 10,000-meter run and won both the 3000 and 5000-meter run titles at the 2017 WAC indoor track and field championships.

He earned first-team All-WAC honors 16 times in his career, doing so in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.

Last February, Lambert was honored as only one of 30 Division I cross country athletes to earn a 4.0 GPA during the fall 2017 semester.

Lambert also served as a team captain in his respective sports and is involved with his church in volunteering at food banks in the Utah County area.
