UVU Wrestler Qualifies For U.S. World Team For Sixth Consecutive Year

ATLANTA-Utah Valley University star wrestler, sophomore Taylor Lamont, qualified for his unprecedented sixth straight U.S. age-group Greco-Roman world team Saturday as part of a special wrestle-off for the 60-kilogram spot at the Georgia World Congress Center of Atlanta.

This commemorates Lamont’s third consecutive appearance on the Junior World Team after previously achieving this same feat for the Cadet World Team.

Reportedly, Lamont is the first athlete in history to make the U.S. world team in his age group for six consecutive years.

This will be Lamont’s third consecutive year competing on the Junior World Team in Greco-Roman.

At the 2016 World Championships, he was a bronze medalist while finishing fifth at the 2017 Junior World Championships.

Lamont became eligible for this special wrestle-off because of the Junior World Team selection procedures which confirm “a delay in a final wrestle-off may occur if a 2017 Junior GR World Team member places in the top four at the April 2018 U.S. Senior Greco-Roman Open and then competes in the June 2018 U.S. Senior Greco-Roman World Team Trials.”

The Wolverines’ 125-pound star is coming off a successful redshirt freshman season which saw him post a 27-5 record, finishing just one win short of All-American status.

He’s also the first wrestler in program history to retain the #1 national ranking after being ranked #1 in his weight class in the national RPI for more than a month in 2017-18.
