MESA, Ariz.-Wednesday, Utah Valley baseball (14-39, 9-18 in WAC play) as the #6 seed in the WAC Tournament, faces #3 seed Sacramento State (33-22, 18-9 in WAC play) at Hohokam Stadium.
This is a double-elimination tournament and the Wolverines’ only chance to advance to the NCAA Tournament is to take the conference tournament title.
The Wolverines’ leaders in batting average are senior outfielder Ryan Eastburn (.326) and senior infielder Michael Beltran (.325).
Junior outfielder Alexander Marco leads the Wolverines in home runs (6) and RBI (39).
Junior right-handed pitcher Jesse Schmitt (a 4-7 record) is Utah Valley’s ace on the staff. Fellow junior right-hander Paxton Schultz has a team-best 90 strikeouts.
For the Hornets, the leader in batting average is junior outfielder Matt Smith (.319).
Sophomore infielder Steven Moretto is Sacramento State’s leader in home runs (7).
Sophomore catcher Dawsen Bacho leads the Hornets in RBI with 45.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Scott Randall is 7-1 on the mound for Sacramento State and junior right-hander Austin Roberts leads the squad with 80 strikeouts.
The Hornets lead the Wolverines 26-18 all-time, but trail the Wolverines 3-1 all-time in the WAC Tournament.
