Utah State’s Gudmundsson Places 1st in Men’s Javelin as NCAA West Regionals Conclude

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Utah State’s Sindri Gudmundsson was among the Utah-based collegiate athletes to excel at the final day of the NCAA West Track & Field regionals hosted by Sacramento State University Saturday.

Gudmundsson, an Icelandic national, is the West’s top seed in the men’s javelin headed into the national championship meet at Hayward Field of Eugene, Ore. June 6-9 with a toss of 255-5 feet.

Additionally, Brigham Young’s Whittni Orton, a star sophomore, placed ninth in the women’s 1500-meter run, qualifying in the event for Eugene, as the top 12 finishers in every running event made the cut.

Meanwhile, the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Brigham Young’s Alyssa Monteverde-Dalton placed 11th to also make the cut for the national title meet.

In the men’s 200-meter dash, Southern Utah’s Tre James advanced to Eugene as well, posting a time of 20.79 seconds, placing him 11th overall.

The men’s 5000-meter run saw Brigham Young’s Connor McMillan (5th), Clayton Young (10th) and Rory Linkletter (11th) all qualify for Eugene, while Utah State’s Dillon Maggard placed sixth, also advancing.

In the women’s 4 x 400, Brigham Young’s women took the last spot, finishing 12th, posting a time of 3:36.82.
