SALT LAKE CITY-Monday, Utah men’s basketball granted a release to signee Caleb Lohner from his national letter-of-intent.
Lohner, who starred at Wasatch Academy, was part of a four-person recruiting class to sign with the Utes in November.
Lohner repelled offers from other Power 5 programs to sign with the Utes and had initially been a part of head coach Larry Krystkowiak’s best signing class at Utah.
This group also consisted of four-star guard Ian Martinez, formerly of Junipero Serra Catholic High School of San Mateo, Calif., Swedish national, combo guard Pelle Larsson and former Sky View High School star shooting guard Mason Falslev.
In a prepared statement Monday, Krystkowiak said the program is disappointed in Lohner’s decision, but that the Utes will honor his wishes and focus on building up their program.
It is believed that Lohner will sign with BYU, but nothing substantial has emerged on this matter.
Former Ute Both Gach, a native of Minneapolis suburb Austin, Minn., returned home as he signed with the Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Big Ten Conference.
The 6-6 183-pound Gach averaged 9.1 points and 2.8 rebounds during his two seasons with the Utes. After sitting out the 2020-21 season, Gach will have two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Golden Gophers.
