MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.-Lexi Palafas amassed a hat trick as the Central Michigan Chippewas bested Southern Utah 4-1 Sunday in non-conference women’s soccer action at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
The aggressive Chippewas were +14 (23-9) in shots on goal against the Thunderbirds and with Shannon Magnan’s goal at the 61:48 mark, Central Michigan built a commanding 4-0 lead.
Devri Hartle found the net for the Thunderbirds at the 70:58 mark, helping SUU avert the shutout.
The Thunderbirds fell to 0-2 on the season and return to Cedar City for their home opener Thursday against UNLV.
LARAMIE, Wyo.-Caitlin Pickett posted a goal at the 92:51 mark, giving the Wyoming Cowgirls a thrilling 1-0 victory over Utah Valley in non-conference women’s soccer action Sunday at Louis S. Madrid Stadium.
Brooklyn Nielsen was gallant at the net for the Wolverines in defeat, amassing seven saves. The Cowgirls improved to 2-0 with Utah Valley falling to 0-2.
Utah Valley’s home opener is Wednesday evening against in-state rival Weber State.
OGDEN, Utah-Ireland Dunn and Paola Van Der Veen each found the net as the Utah Utes blanked Weber State 2-0 Sunday at Wildcat Soccer Field in non-conference women’s soccer action. Carly Nelson earned the shutout for the Utes, posting three saves in the victory. Utah improved to 1-1 with the victory and is next in action Friday at Utah State in another non-conference tilt.
LOGAN, Utah-Maddie Castro and McKenna Buisman each scored and the Minnesota Golden Gophers doubled up Utah State 2-1 at Chuck & Gloria Bell Soccer Field Sunday in non-conference women’s soccer action. The Golden Gophers were a decisive +13 (18-5) in shots on goal, which was instrumental in their improving to 2-0 on the season. Sara Noel scored for the Aggies in the 25th minute, giving 0-2 Utah State an early 1-0 lead.
