Utah Baseball Travels to Surprise, Ariz.

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team travels to Surprise, Arizona, this weekend to face Ohio State and Nebraska, Feb. 22-25, at Surprise Stadium.

The series kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 22, with Ohio State at 5:00 p.m. MT and continues on Friday, Feb. 23, against Nebraska at 5:00 p.m. MT. Saturday’s game against Ohio State begins at 4:00 p.m. MT while Sunday’s game vs. Nebraska on Sunday is at 1:00 p.m. MT. Sunday’s game will be held on a side field due to stadium conflicts.

The highlight of the opening weekend for the Utes (0-3) was freshman pitcher Brett Brocoff, who tied the school record with 12 strikeouts against Oral Roberts. He was named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Player of the Week for the performance. Brocoff’s 12 K’s was tied for the second-most in the nation by a pitcher after the first weekend, and was the most by a Pac-12 pitcher. Senior pitcher Tanner Thomas also had a strong start, recording a career-high 10 strikeouts (second in the Pac-12) and allowing one unearned run on two hits over 5 1/2 innings pitched.

At the plate, Dominic Foscalina and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., each had four hits. Foscalina and Erick Migueles each hit a home run while Keirsey went 2-for-2 in stolen bases.

Ohio State is 3-1 to start the season. Senior Noah McGowan hit .400 with 13 RBI during the first weekend of the year.

Nebraska opened its season at 3-1 as well, which included a pair of wins against Washington State, and are led by senior preseason All-American Luis Alvarado.
