OREM, Utah-Former Wasatch High wrestling star Spencer Heywood excelled Saturday for Utah Valley as the Wolverines hosted the 12th Annual UVU Open.
Heywood, a redshirt freshman out of Heber City, placed second place overall in the 157-pound division.
He vanquished Western Wyoming’s Sven Pickens 18-3 and then bested the unattached Jaxon Moore 18-9.
Heywood then lost in the next round to another unattached wrestler, Walker Dempsey, in an 8-5 decision.
Heywood and his teammates are next in action Saturday at home against Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference tilt at 5:00 pm.
Immediately afterward, at 7:00 pm at Orem, the Wolverines commence their Big 12 conference schedule against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
