COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Saturday and Sunday, No. 24 Dixie State baseball (15-3, 4-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play) plays a doubleheader each day at Colorado-Colorado Springs (11-6, 4-0 in RMAC play).
Because of inclement weather being forecast, the Trailblazers and Mountain Lions have made these changes to the schedule. Furthermore, UCCS has announced that these games are closed to the public because of the risks associated with coronavirus.
Dixie State head coach Chris Pfatenhauer (254-128-1, .664 at Dixie State) is in his eighth season as the Trailblazers’ skipper.
Pfatenhauer will go with right-handed pitcher Justin Dunham (2-0, 1.52 ERA) and left-handed pitcher Jack Gonzales (2-1, 2.77 ERA) Saturday. Sunday, right-handed pitcher Jimmy Borzone (1-0, 0.00 ERA) and left-handed pitcher Tevita Gerber (4-0, 2.76 ERA) get the nod for Dixie State on the mound.
Among Trailblazers with at least 20 at-bats, senior first baseman/designated hitter Jake Engel, the reigning RMAC Player of the week, leads the squad in batting average (.458), hits (27), home runs (6) and RBI (26).
Engel also leads the squad with 27 runs scored. Redshirt junior Tanner Harper is batting an impressive .408 as well for Dixie State.
In his fourth season at the helm of the UCCS program, head coach Dave Hajek is 89-80 (.527).
This weekend, the Mountain Lions will go with right-handed pitcher Daniel Silva (1-0, 2.77 ERA) and fellow right-handed hurler Christian Manmano (0-2, 3.75 ERA) Saturday.
Sunday, UCCS rides with right-handed pitcher Jonathan Cowles (3-0, 2.70 ERA) and left-handed hurler Brian Marquez (3-0, 4.68 ERA).
Among players with at least 20 at-bats, the Mountain Lions are led in batting average by junior outfielder Matt Berg (.397). Berg also leads UCCS in hits (27), home runs (4) and RBI (18).
Senior infielder Matt McDermott leads the Mountain Lions in runs scored, with 18.
Dixie State seeks to remain perfect against UCCS as they are currently 5-0 all-time against the Mountain Lions.
