NCAA Tennis Roundup: 9/16

MIDLAND, Texas-Utah State freshman men’s tennis star Isaac Arturo Arevalo prevailed 6-2, 6-3 over New Mexico’s Dominic West in the singles final at the Midland Invitational Sunday. He became the first Aggie since Tomas Cosmai in 2015 to earn a fall tournament title.

All told, this weekend, Arevalo, a native of Mazatlan, Mexico, went 5-0 in singles play. This is the best stat for an Aggies freshman since Tanner Dance started 3-1 in 2009.

The Aggies also won in extra matches doubles as the duo of Jose Carvajal and Rithvik Bollipalli bested Texas-San Antonio’s Juri Reckow and Javier Gonzalez.

The Aggies men are back in action September 20-22 at the BYU Invitational in Provo and will also compete at the ITF Futures Tournament at Fountain Valley, Calif. at this same time.

The Utah State women also competed at this tournament as in singles extra matches, the Aggies’ Alexandra Pisareva of Kyiv, Ukraine, prevailed 7-5, 6-1 over Samantha Smith of Penn State.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Utah State’s women’s tennis team fared well at the Bedford Cup, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy Sunday to conclude the weekend at this event. Gabrielle Dekers of Ammerzonden, Netherlands defeated Wyoming’s Ana Royo, 6-7, 6-0, 10-5, while Dekers and teammate Alexandra Taylor of Syndey, Australia downed Boise State’s Hanna Kantenwein and Frankie Trella of Boise State, 8-3 in extra matches doubles.
