EDMONTON, Alberta(630-CHED)-Per AM-630 CHED of Edmonton’s Dave Campbell, former Utah State standout defensive lineman John Chick is retiring from North American professional football Friday.
Campbell, the radio analyst for Edmonton Eskimos broadcasts on CHED, reported Chick’s retirement on his Twitter account Friday morning.
Chick, a native of Campbell County Wyo., played at Utah State in 2003 and 2005, posting 12.5 sacks, 19 tackles for a loss and 2 forced fumbles during his time in Logan.
Chick then spent time on the Houston Texans’ practice squad in 2006 before heading to Canada where he became a star.
In stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2007-2009; 2013-2015), the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2016-17) and the Eskimos (2017), Chick won two Grey Cups (the Canadian Football League’s championship game, somewhat comparable to the Super Bowl) in 2007 and 2013 and was named the CFL’s Defensive Player of the year in 2009.
Chick parlayed his CFL success into an opportunity in the NFL, which the Jacksonville Jaguars granted him.
In 19 games with the Jaguars in 2011 and 2012, Chick netted 2.5 sacks, three passes defensed and a forced fumble, as well as a fumble return before a devastating knee injury in 2012, ended his NFL stint.
All told, in his pro career, Chick posted 69.5 sacks, 15 forced fumbles and 219 tackles, while becoming a CFL All-Star in 2009, 2014 and 2016, as well as a CFL-East Divisional All-Star in 2016 and a CFL-Western Divisional All-Star in 2009 and 2014.
