SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Five Weber State track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAA West Regionals May 24-26 at Sacramento, Calif. and all of them are from Utah.
Herriman, Utah native, women’s high jumper Abbie Brecht, is the top-ranked Wildcats competitor to compete at this meet, hosted by Sacramento State University.
She enters the meet as the West’s 28th ranked high jumper (this entails all Division I schools in the West region that will be competing at this meet) and won the Big Sky high jump championship May 8-11 at Moscow, Idaho with a career-best jump of 5 feet and 9-75 inches. This represents the best jump in the Big Sky Conference this season and is the sixth-best in Weber State history.
Ogden, Utah native, senior Jordan Cross, has qualified in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase and has the 38th best time in the West in this competition. This past April at the Robison Invitational at BYU, he obtained a career-best time of 8:56.08 in this event (the best time in the Big Sky in this even this year). He also won the Big Sky Conference individual title in his event in a time of 9:01.49.
Senior Anthony Gregory, a native of Roy, Utah, will be competing in the men’s high jump. Gregory is ranked 33rd in the NCAA West region heading into the meet. He placed fourth in his event at the Big Sky meet and posted a season-best leap of 6 feet 11 inches at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa, Calif.
Orem, Utah native, junior Summer Harper, will compete in the 3000-meter women’s steeplechase after posting a season-best time of 10:40.32 at the Clay Invitational. This was the fifth-best time in the Big Sky this region. Harper placed fourth in her event at the Big Sky championship meet.
Gunnison, Utah native Kate Sorensen, a freshman, will compete in the 400-meter hurdles at the regionals. Earlier this season, Sorensen set a new Weber State record in this event, posting a time of 58.92 seconds. This time ranks as the third-best in the Big Sky this season and is the 32nd best in the West. She finished second at the Big Sky championships in this event, posting a time of 59.21 seconds at Moscow.
