PROVO, Utah-Tuesday, BYU baseball (6-6) hosts Utah Valley (3-9) in what is the first home game of the season for the Cougars.
The first 200 fans in attendance for this 5:00 pm opening pitch at Miller Park will receive a free T-shirt. With the temperatures projected for the 40’s, $1 hot chocolate is also available.
Cougars freshman right-handed pitcher Tyson Heaton, a product of Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, Calif., will get his first start as a collegian this evening.
In five previous appearances on the mound, Heaton has posted eight strikeouts, three walks and four earned runs in 9.1 innings of work.
Among Cougars with 20 or more appearances at the plate, freshman infielder Andrew Pintar leads the squad with a .326 batting average while also posting team-bests in hits (14), runs (10) and doubles (3).
Junior outfielder Mitch McIntyre leads the Cougars with 8 RBI and his fellow junior outfielder, Hayden Leatham, is BYU’s leader in home runs (2).
Right-handed pitcher, Las Vegas native (Palo Verde H.S.) Bryce Robison leads the Cougars in ERA (1.86) among pitchers who have pitched a minimum of five innings on the season.
Junior right-hander Justin Sterner leads BYU with 19 strikeouts.
In his eighth season at the helm, Cougars head coach Mike Littlewood is 221-166 (.571) in leading the program.
Utah Valley’s leader in batting average, with a minimum of 20 at bats, is senior infielder Kade Poulsen (.346).
Junior infielder Mitch Moralez leads the Wolverines in RBI (6) and hits (17).
Senior outfielder Jake Berry has UVU’s only home run on the season.
Senior right-hander Jesse Schmit leads the Wolverines in strikeouts (19) and among pitchers who have pitched at least five innings this season, sophomore left-handed pitcher Logan Petet has an 0.93 GPA, leading the squad.
In his 12th season at the helm, Wolverines head coach Eric Madsen is 300-321 (.483) in leading the program.
BYU is 52-8 (.867) in season openers since 1960 and the Cougars are 29-9 all-time against the Wolverines.
