LARAMIE, Wyo.-Saturday, a pair of former Wasatch High star wrestlers will compete at the Cowboy Open at Laramie, Wyo. for Utah Valley University.
Competing at 157 pounds is redshirt freshman Jakob Discher, a 2017 graduate of Wasatch High who was a high-school All-American for the Wasps. Additionally, he won two individual state titles and helped the Wasps win three state championships.
While redshirting for the Wolverines in 2017-18, he competed as an unattached competitor at 165 pounds, netting a 6-6 record.
Discher placed fourth at the Northern Colorado Open with a 3-2 record, while also going 3-2 at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Furthermore, he picked up one win by major decision and four by decision.
His fellow redshirt freshman, Spencer Heywood, is expected to compete at 157 pounds as well for the Wolverines.
While at Wasatch High, Heywood was a Fargo All-American in both Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions.
Heywood was a three-time state finalist and one-time state champion and played an instrumental role in Wasatch winning the 2015 state wrestling title.
Like Discher, he redshirted in 2017-18 and netted a 7-8 record while competing as an unattached competitor at 157 pounds.
He earned 3-2 victories at both the Reno Tournament of Champions and the UVU Open. He recorded one win by fall, four by major decision and two by decision.
