Ute Tribe Students May Lose Tuition Waivers If DEI Bill Is Passed

(Salt Lake City, UT) — Ute Tribe students are in jeopardy of losing their University tuition waivers. This comes as the Utah Legislature considers a bill banning diversity, equity and inclusion on publicly funded college campuses. Senate bill sponsor Republican Keith Grover said in a quote to the Salt Lake Tribune this week that the legislation could have that unintended consequence and that he hadn’t previously considered that possible effect. Currently, public universities offer tuition waivers to any student that is a member of the eight sovereign tribal nations to help combat the lack of higher education within the community. It is still to be decided if they will be able to still receive those waivers based on being a part of a sovereign nation and not because of race.
