Utah student leaders criticize school response to murder

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — University of Utah student leaders have criticized the administration for how it handled concerns by a student-athlete before she was fatally shot by a man she previously dated.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Associated Students of the University of Utah released a public statement condemning the school about a year after 21-year-old Lauren McCluskey was murdered by a 37-year-old registered sex offender on parole.

Officials say the McCluskey family filed a $56 million lawsuit against the university for lack of protection.

Students say they were prompted to act this week with a formal critique after the school requested a judge dismiss the lawsuit.

University officials say they had no clearly established constitutional requirement to protect its students from visitors to campus who are not under university control.
