Utah man pleads guilty to fatal stabbing of estranged wife

FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A Utah man has pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing his estranged wife in front of their son.

Prosecutors say the 47-year-old Joe Castillo of Layton killed 36-year-old KayLynn Spackman in June 2014 after entering the home they once shared, confronting her in the garage and attacking her with a knife.

Court documents say the couple’s 17-year-old son tried to stop his father, who eventually fled when a neighbor came to see what was happening.

Castillo pleaded guilty to murder Tuesday. The Deputy Davis County Attorney says prosecutors dismissed three other charges as part of the plea deal.

In plea documents, Castillo said intended to kill himself with the knife but lost control during an argument with his wife.

Castillo faces up to life in prison at his March 21 sentencing.
