Utah Lawmakers Pass Transgender Bathroom Bill

(Salt Lake City, UT) – A compromise by Utah lawmakers is behind the passage announced of a controversial transgender bathroom bill. The bill now heads to Governor Spencer Cox. House members had initially said no to changes the Senate was offering to House Bill 257. The bill was batted back and forth like a legislative ping-pong ball last week between both chambers. On Thursday six lawmakers from both bodies agreed to meet to hash out their differences about who can use what bathroom in government-owned buildings. Their fifth version of the bill was the one sent on to both chambers for final approval. Among the provisions, the bill says women may use only women’s bathrooms and men must use those designated for them specifically.
