One person has been confirmed dead and three others were injured in the crash. Troopers said a red Ford pickup truck hauling a trailer loaded with a flooring product was traveling eastbound when it lost control and crossed into upcoming lanes of traffic.
It then collided head-on with a white GMC pickup truck and both vehicles then went off the north side of the road.
The male driver of the GMC truck died at the scene and his name and age were not immediately released. A female inside the GMC truck was taken to a hospital with serious injuries but that were not life-threatening, per statements from UHP officials.
Officials said both occupants in the Ford pickup were transported to a hospital in critical condition. Their names and ages were also not released.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but troopers said there was intermittently heavy fog at the time of the accident and U.S. 40 was also icy at the time.
Officials tweeted that medical helicopters were summoned, but they could not arrive because of the dense fog.
UHP officials confirmed the crash was caused because the drivers were driving at a speed that was too fast for the conditions. Their poor tire treads were also being investigated as possible factors in the crash. Please stay with us for the latest.
