(Salt Lake City, UT) — A judge has ruled that Utah lawmakers violated voters’ rights by approving congressional maps that split Salt Lake County and favored Republicans. Third District Court Judge Dianna Gibson said the Legislature bypassed the independent redistricting commission created by voters in 2018’s Proposition 4. The ruling requires new maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. The case follows a lawsuit over alleged gerrymandering, and the Utah Supreme Court previously affirmed that citizen initiatives are constitutionally protected.
