Utah Coal’s Future In Oakland Is Still Alive

(Oakland, CA) — After an Alameda Superior Court Judge ruling, Utah may still be able to ship its coal through Oakland to Asia. A judge earlier this week ruled that Oakland violated the rights of leaseholder Phil Tagami after the city cancelled his lease due to environmental concerns and extended it into 2026. Utah planned to work with Tagami dating back to 2016 when it put 53-million dollars in an infrastructure fund. Coal production in Utah fell to its lowest level since 1976 last year. Utah is looking to ship more coal to Asia as American demand is continuing to decrease.
