North Salt Lake Issues Notice of Violation Against Sewer District Over Bad Odor

NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah-Monday, North Salt Lake city officials issued a notice of violation against a sewer district operating a nearby treatment plant over a bad odor that has been lingering since last autumn.

Per North Salt Lake City manager Ken Leetham, this move was aimed at forcing a resolution with the South Davis Sewer District.

Leetham said the city has fielded various complaints, with some coming in the past several days, concerning the odors that had generally presented east of Legacy Parkway and west of Redwood Road, north of Center Street.

Leetham stated the notice of violation issued Monday gave the city the potential to assess fines of $100 annually.

Leetham said the sewer district has given their full commitment that this situation will be resolved. He expressed that no one knows what this resolution will be at this stage, however.

South Davis Sewer District general manager Del Wayment said the agency had already spent an excess of $100,000 on problems swirling about the south plant. Fixing the smell may take thousands of dollars, however, he said.

Wayment expressed that the smell is insignificant compared to the grievous impact it is having on peoples’ lives, however.

Wayment said he believes there are two separate issues in this matter. It starts with a nasty, “penetrating” odor caused by food waste, or “bio-solids,” at the south plant.

Next, he continued, is likely a toxic discharge which he believes disrupts how the system is supposed to work.

Resident Wendy Losee also expressed her displeasure, as she expressed hopes that this issue can be swiftly resolved.
