Mayor: Free bus rides, city hall renovations coming to Utah

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — People will be able to ride public transportation for free for a limited time in St. George, a Utah mayor said.

Fees will be waived for SunTran buses from March 1 to May 31, so people can offer feedback about the system, The Spectrum reported Wednesday.

Mayor Jon Pike made the announcement during an address where he talked about plans for the city this year, including free public transportation rides, city hall renovations and the upcoming Ironman world championships.

“SunTran is not the only answer to our transportation issues, but it is part of the answer. We need to expand SunTran,” Pike said, citing additional routes have already been designed but need more work before implemented.

SunTran only serves half of the city’s residents, but averages about 400,000 riders each year, officials said.

Public transportation expansion is expected to help combat traffic in the city, but there also plans to expand roads and construct additional traffic lights and circles, Pike said.

Pike also mentioned a $19 million project to renovate city hall is expected to break ground this spring.
