Heber Valley Western Music & Cowboy Poetry Gathering celebrated the silver anniversary with a special guest appearance from Governor Gary Herbert. Herbert was invited to the Friday night concert at the Wasatch High School auditorium to present a special lifetime achievement award to Cowboy Poet Waddie Mitchell of Nevada and long time Cowboy musician Jack Hannah of California. Mitchell has been the host of the gathering and has been instrumental in the growth and popularity of cowboy culture and preserving the Western way of life. Jack Hannah, the younger brother of the Sons of the San Joaquin, at 87 years old was brought to tears with appreciation for the recognition. Mary Kelly, producer of the gathering for the past 15 years, and volunteer for the 25 years of operation was also recognize for her commitment and work to keep the West alive in the Heber Valley. Governor Herbert shared his own cowboy poem during the fifteen minute award and recognized the efforts of many hundreds of volunteers and the $2 million dollar economic impact the event brings to the area in revenues. The award presentation was followed by an impressive concert by the Bar J Wranglers of Jackson, Wyoming. The event continues on through the weekend in various locations, with the Buckaroo Fair and multiple stages available at the high school.
