SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is reiterating her push for school choice during an annual education technology conference, comparing the issue to being able to switch between phone service providers.
DeVos told hundreds of people in a packed auditorium in Salt Lake City on Tuesday that she thinks she has received criticism for her policies because people are afraid of change.
Dozens of protesters carrying signs that read such things as, “Support our public schools!” gathered on the sidewalk in front of the conference.
Protester Kellie Henderson says she couldn’t afford the nearly $3,000 conference tickets, but is concerned with DeVos’ support of school choice.
DeVos has raised and contributed millions of dollars to support the push to give parents choices on where their children go to school, because it could hurt public education.
