PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins gave up a three-goal lead in game one of the Stanley Cup before pulling themselves together. Pittsburgh rookie Jake Guentzel beat Nashville’s Pekka Rinne with 3:17 left in regulation to put the Penguins ahead to stay in a 5-3 victory in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Guentzel snapped an eight-game goalless drought to help the defending champions escape. Game 2 is Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods says he didn’t realize how strongly a mix of medications would affect him, resulting in a DUI arrest in Florida. Woods say he takes full responsibility. Woods spent nearly four hours in the Palm Beach County Jail after being arrested early Monday. The 14-time major champion says in a statement that alcohol wasn’t involved.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Commissioner Gary Bettman says Tampa will host the 2018 All-Star weekend in January, the surest sign yet that the NHL will actually bypass the Olympics as it says it will. Bettman also announced that the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs’ previously-reported outdoor game at the Naval Academy will be the start of a series of outdoor games at U.S. service academies.
UNDATED (AP) — Award-winning sports writer and commentator Frank Deford has died. He was 78. Deford was a six-time Sports Writer of the Year and a member of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame. He wrote with a lyrical elegance and was best known for his work at Sports Illustrated and on National Public Radio. He retired this month from NPR’s “Morning Edition” after 37 years as a contributor.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Adrian Beltre has finally begun his season with the Texas Rangers after recovering from a calf strain. He had a single, recording his 2,943rd career hit, tying him with Frank Robinson for 34th all-time. But the Tampa Bay Rays won the day as Tim Beckham hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh when the Rays scored five runs in a span of three pitches for a 10-8 victory.
