Bellinger reached 21 homers in 51 career games — faster than any other player in big league history. Despite spotting the rest of the NL three weeks before he was called up from the minors, the first baseman leads the league in home runs.
SEATTLE (AP) — Catcher Mike Zunino continued his torrid month with a pair of two-run home runs, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 6-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Beginning a stretch with 16 of 19 games at home prior to the All-Star break, the Mariners used a trio of homers to hand the Tigers their third straight loss and ninth in the last 13 games.
KANSAS CITY (AP) — Red Sox ace Chris Sale comes off his best start in more than a month — and his only loss during that span — when he takes the mound at Kansas City tonight. The major league leader in strikeouts allowed one run and four hits over eight innings while striking out 10 in a 1-0 loss at Philadelphia last Thursday. Boston expects to be without Dustin Pedroia for the second consecutive game after the second baseman was hit by a pitch Sunday night in Houston. He is day to day.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Redskins aren’t in the clear with their team name just yet, even after the Supreme Court ruled Monday that the government can’t block trademarks on the basis that they’re offensive. Supreme Court precedent may help the club in its ongoing legal battle, but the fight over the Redskins moniker will continue in social and business realms.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Vegas Golden Knights, the newest entry in the National Hockey League, could land their franchise goaltender, a few veterans and a lot of young talent in the expansion draft Wednesday night. Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury figures to be their starter as GM George McPhee looks to build a team that can be competitive relatively quickly. The expansion draft is in Las Vegas and the new franchise will commence with its schedule in its first season later this year.
