WASATCH COUNTY, Utah-Sunday, a married couple passed away following an incident at Deer Creek State Park.
Just before noon, Utah State Parks rangers responded to an area of the reservoir off of the main state park entrance.
72-year-old David McMillan of Arizona had been swimming with family off of a pontoon boat. While swimming, McMillan, and an adult family member, began to struggle to keep their heads above water.
Upon seeing this, McMillan’s 59-year-old wife, Catherine McMillan, jumped into the water to assist in the process and also began struggling.
None of the three were wearing life jackets.
During this incident, a passerby with EMS training, assisted responding park rangers by retrieving the three individuals from the water, administering first aid and CPR.
The McMillans were transported to nearby hospitals, but were each pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The family member is expected to fully recover from her injuries.
The incident is still under investigation.
Additionally, Sunday afternoon officials responded to an additional call for help at Jordanelle State Park.
This involved three individuals and a flotation pool toy.
While swimming with the group, a 14-year-old girl began to struggle in the water and continued going under. She was not wearing a life jacket.
Beach-goers rushed out to assist her and immediately administered CPR. The girl was revived without further incident and was later cleared at a nearby hospital.
Utah DNR reminds everyone to stay on guard when venturing outdoors, while prioritizing safety.
Everyone should wear life jackets and ensure their children are wearing life jackets as well.
