CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Justin Thomas fired a 3-under 68 to win the PGA Championship by two shots over Patrick Reed, Francesco Molinari and Louis Oosthuizen (WUHST’-hay-zehn) at Quail Hollow. Thomas finished 8 under in earning his first Grand Slam major, rallying to win the event after beginning the final round two shots behind Kevin Kisner. Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama (hih-DEH’-kee math-soo-YAH’-mah) finished in a fifth-place tie at minus-5, one stroke ahead of Kisner and Graham DeLaet.

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have regained sole possession of first place in the NL Central, one game ahead of St. Louis and two in front of Milwaukee. Jake Arrieta (ar-ee-EH’-tuh) worked six strong innings and Javier Baez launched a three-run homer as the Cubs whipped Arizona, 7-2. The Cardinals had won a season-high eight straight until R.A. Dickey held them to one run over seven innings of the Braves’ 6-3 triumph at St. Louis.

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Indians beat Tampa Bay for the third straight day to maintain a 4 ½-game lead over second-place Minnesota in the AL Central. Corey Kluber picked up his 11th win and Austin Jackson led off the eighth with a homer as the Indians nipped the Rays, 4-3. The Twins kept pace by winning for the seventh time in eight games, getting homers from Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano (sah-NOH’) in a 6-4 decision over Detroit.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Boston Red Sox pulled out a 3-2, 10-inning win over the New York Yankees to take a 5 ½-game lead over the Bombers in the AL East. Andrew Benintendi singled home the tiebreaking run in the 10th, one inning after Rafael Devers (DEH’-vurz) tied it with a solo blast off Aroldis Chapman. Chris Sale got a no-decision after striking out 12 while limiting the Yanks to a run and four hits in seven innings.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Justin Turner socked a three-run homer and a solo shot as the Los Angeles Dodgers won for the 28th time in their last 33 games, 6-4 against San Diego. Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH’-nee grahn-DAHL’) also homered for Los Angeles, which improved to 83-34 and stretched their lead in the NL West to 18 games. Kenta Maeda (mah-EH’-dah) pitched into the sixth inning for his 11th win.
