The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Delivers 12,000 Masks To Stem Spread of COVID-19 At Mexican Migrant Shelters

EL PASO, Texas-Per a report from KTSM-Channel 9, the NBC affiliate in El Paso, Texas, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated 12,000 face masks to migrant shelters at Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

This border neighbor to El Paso is Mexico’s fifth largest city, with 1,321,004 residents as of the last census.

These masks are to be distributed to the operators of 15 facilities that house, feed and provide other services for families recently returned from the United States or who are headed northward to flee poverty or crime.

Elder Ulises Chavez Carpio, a member of the Fourth Quorum of the Seventy of the Salt Lake City-based faith, says members of the Church in Ciudad Juarez, where he is headquartered, have donated more than 200,000 face masks to medical providers in Mexico since the commencement of this pandemic in North America.

Enrique Valenzuela, the director of the Chihuahua Population Council, lauded churches on both sides of the border who have assisted Chihuahua with this recent surge.

Thirteen people apiece tested positive for the virus in both May and June at the Leona Victoria shelter of Ciudad Juarez.
