Canyons School District To Delay Graduation Ceremonies, But Award Diplomas May 28

SANDY, Utah-Canyons School District, in information released late Tuesday, confirmed they will award diplomas virtually May 28 but still plans to have graduation ceremonies at a later date.

This plan was endorsed Tuesday and will allow all high schools in the district (Alta, Brighton, Corner Canyon, Hillcrest, Jordan, Canyons Technical Education Center, Diamond Ridge) to host a “celebration” of their senior classes.

They may host such things as banquets or dances in the summer as long as local public health and safety regulations are honored.

This recommendation was not unanimous as one board member believes COVID-19 restrictions may last well into the fall.

District Superintendent Jim Briscoe wants schools to select a date in July or early August by which traditional graduation ceremonies can occur.

Jordan School District plans to have a delayed yearbook signing event and dinner/dance when public health instructions permit.

The Canyons School District Board confirmed 76 percent of their students prefer a traditional graduation ceremony.
