LOS ANGELES (AP)-Los Angeles Dodgers third-baseman Justin Turner has a game-changing idea for how Major League Baseball can avoid long games.
Turner says, if teams are still tied after the 10th inning, games should end in a home run derby.
With coronavirus shortening the MLB season and likely forcing teams to play doubleheaders every week, Turner thinks long extra-inning games would wear out relief pitchers.
He’s proposing a three-round home run derby instead. Each team would get to send up their three best hitters, who would get either 10 pitches or five outs to work with per round. Whoever has the most home runs at the end, wins.
He credits the NHL’s shootout for giving him the three-round idea.
Turner also says a coach should throw the pitches to save pitcher’s arms.
