Utah police say 3-year-old killed in highway rollover crash

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A 3-year-old child died after being ejected from a vehicle in a Utah rollover accident, authorities said.

Police said the child was only wearing a lap seat belt and not properly restrained when the accident occurred around 3 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 15 north of Cedar City, The Spectrum reports.

A Toyota 4-Runner began to veer off the road and onto the right shoulder when the driver attempted to reach back to give the child a bottle, a Utah Highway Patrol report said.

The driver tried to correct the vehicle, traveling back across the roadway before hitting a guardrail that caused the vehicle to roll.

The child was thrown from the vehicle and killed, the report said.

Another passenger was seriously injured and transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. The driver sustained minor injuries.

The driver and the injured passenger were wearing seat belts, the report said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
