The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Confirms Earthquake Affects Temple Square

SALT LAKE CITY-With the 5.7-magnitude earthquake affecting downtown Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake Valley, and locations as far away as Idaho, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirms Temple Square and, more specifically, the Salt Lake Temple were affected as well.

In a statement from Church spokesman Daniel Woodruff, the Church confirmed that the Salt Lake Temple, which is undergoing a seismic upgrade, sustained minor damage Wednesday morning’s earthquake.

On the top of the temple, Angel Moroni’s trumpet fell off and “minor displacement” occurred on some of the temple’s smaller spire stones. No workers were injured. Crews on the job site have been sent home for the day and an assessment is underway to determine their needs moving forward. This event confirms why the current project is essential to preserve the temple and create a safer environment for all patrons and visitors.
