After a storm of complaints by parents of Wasatch High School students about the new math curriculum, Principal Tod Johnson sent an email to address the complaints, “We’ve listened to your math recommendations and are making the following adjustments:
1. Math homework should not be longer than 30 minutes each night for general math classes and 60 minutes for honors and advanced math classes.
2. Homework should be supported in class and based on what has been taught. Students should not have to find a tutor to teach them how to do their homework.
3. Grades are a big deal and there should be a reasonable pathway for students to earn the grade they are expecting.
Many of you have asked about the math changes this year at Wasatch. These changes are based on our goal for each of you to be ready for college math when you graduate (honors students are getting ready for Calculus). The math problems you are being asked to solve have been proven by other students in Utah to lead to these goals.” – Tod Johnson
