THISTLE, Utah (AP) — A 10-mile stretch of a rural highway in central Utah remained closed Saturday after flash flooding from storm runoff sent mud and debris over the roadway.
The Utah Department of Transportation said the flooding Friday night closed U.S. 89 south of the junction with U.S. 6 at Thistle, which is 58 miles (93 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.
The Highway Patrol said Friday night that 2 feet (0.6 meters) of rock and mud covered the highway.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street said about 30 cars were stuck between debris fields but that emergency personnel reached the vehicles and determined that nobody was injured.
UDOT said drivers should use alternate routes.
