SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah mother is suing school administrators alleging that her son was dragged about 175 feet by a school bus in a racially motivated event.
In the lawsuit filed Tuesday, Brenda Mayes says the bus driver intentionally closed the door on her son’s backpack one morning in February as he was exiting the bus. He was pinned to the outside of the door as the bus drove down the street. He wasn’t physically injured.
Her attorney Bob Sykes says the boy is a biracial 7th grade student at West Point Junior High School of West Point, Utah
She says other parents of biracial children at the school have reported incidents of harassment and discrimination by the same bus driver to administrators, and no action was taken.
Davis County school officials did not immediately respond to comment.
