OREM, Utah-Sunday, Utah Valley University confirmed that former Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves power forward/center and Lakers assistant coach Mark Madsen has been hired as their new men’s basketball coach.
This will be officialized Monday, the university stated.
Madsen will be only the third coach in the Wolverines’ Division I history, which spans 16 years.
Over the course of the past six seasons, Madsen has served as an assistant with the Lakers.
The former Stanford standout also helped the Lakers win NBA championships in the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
Upon his retirement, Madsen served as an assistant during the 2009-10 season with the Utah Flash of the NBA G League.
He then returned to Stanford, earning his MBA from the Stanford Graduate of Business in 2012. That same year, he joined then-Cardinal head coach Johnny Dawkins’ staff.
Madsen then served as the head coach of the Lakers’ NBA G League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders in 2013 and served as a Lakers assistant from 2013 until this new hiring.
Madsen also served a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints mission in Spain. He and his wife, Hannah, have one son, William.
